Stained and yellowed teeth can be embarrassing. You may be reluctant to smile if your teeth are stained, and smiling is good for your health! If your smile isn't as bright and white as you'd like it to be, professional teeth whitening may be the answer.
Most healthy adults are good candidates for teeth whitening. If you have untreated decay, we will want to treat that first, because the whitening gel can be very painful if it gets into an area of decay! Some causes of discoloration cannot be fixed with whitening. If you have discoloration due to amalgam fillings, there are other options we can explore to correct this, such as replacing them with tooth-colored (composite) fillings.
Gray teeth due to tetracycline use is very difficult to fix. While some people with tetracycline staining have gotten satisfactory results from whitening treatment, be aware that results will vary and you may see little to no change even with professional teeth whitening. Whitening can also cause areas of tetracycline discoloration to become more prominent, as the teeth whiten around the horizontal lines caused by tetracycline.
If you have veneers, crowns or bonding, keep in mind that teeth whitening will not change the color of these. We recommend completing any teeth whitening treatment before getting veneers, crowns, or bonding for the best results and more evenly colored teeth.
Every mouth is different, so to determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening and to explore other options to improve your smile if you are not, we recommend scheduling a consultation. Call our Elk Grove dental office today and we will be happy to assist you!
