While dental implants are an excellent choice for tooth replacement therapy, they are not always the best solution for everyone. In general, if you have moderate bone structure and healthy gingival tissue (gums), dental implants can be successful. There are some medical conditions that can raise the risk of implant failure, including chronic medical conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, or heavy smoking.
If you are considered to be a high-risk candidate, your dentist will review the risks and determine on a case-by-case basis whether implants are right for you. There are often ways to increase the chance of implant success if you are determined and dedicated to creating and maintaining a treatment plan. You may need to work with your doctor to get chronic issues under control to increase your chances of success.
If you are an adult in good health and are committed to a good oral hygiene routine, you will most likely be a good candidate for dental implants. We do not recommend dental implants in children until their permanent teeth have grown in.
