Why do you recommend dental onlays?

Return to FAQs

Dental crowns and onlays are both methods of restoring damaged or decayed teeth when a filling isn't enough. While our Elk Grove dentists offer both options, we prefer a minimally invasive approach to dentistry and recommend dental onlays when they are appropriate.

Onlays are a less invasive method of restoring damaged teeth. Since they are not manufactured to cover the whole tooth, just the damaged part, they allow us to leave more of your healthy tooth in place. A crown requires removal of enough tooth structure to fit the crown into place without it looking bulky or unnatural and to ensure a comfortable fit. This usually means removing a substantial amount of healthy tooth material.

We believe minimally invasive dentistry practices are the best choice for you and your oral health. If your tooth can be repaired with a dental onlay instead of a crown, this will give you more healthy tooth structure to support the onlay, improving the strength of the restoration and the overall health of your mouth.

If the damage is too extensive to be repaired by an onlay, or we truly believe a crown is the better option for you, we will be happy to place a crown. Ultimately, we want to help you make the best decisions to ensure your healthy, beautiful smile for years to come. Call our office today to schedule a consultation and find out if onlays are right for you.
