Why do you recommend fluoride and sealants?

Return to FAQs

Fluoride is an essential tool for prevention because it can help reduce the number of cavities your child develops, keeping their teeth strong and healthy. Many cities today fluoridate their municipal water supplies, and this practice has proven to be an effective way to make sure we all have access to this important mineral.

However, if you use well water or live in an area that does not have fluoridated water, your child may not be getting enough fluoride to prevent cavities and keep their teeth healthy. In this case, we can supplement the amount of fluoride your child gets is with rinses that help to strengthen their teeth.

If necessary, we may recommend application of fluoride varnish, a long-term treatment which can protect your teeth for up to three months. A fluoride varnish treatment is quick and easy, and we simply “paint” the fluoride onto your child’s teeth.

We may recommend application of sealants to your child’s molars if they are prone to cavities. Tiny crevices in the molars make proper oral hygiene difficult, and sealants fill in these spaces to create a smooth surface that is easier to keep clean.

Please contact our office to arrange an appointment for your child. We can evaluate the condition of their teeth and decide if fluoride or sealants are recommended.
